Forecast for Titan: Wild Weather Could be Ahead

Vast Ligeia Mare in False Color

Two new models with implications for NASA's Cassini mission suggest the onset of spring in Titan's northern hemisphere could bring waves and hurricanes.

Herschel Space Observatory Finds Galaxy Mega Merger

The Making of a Giant Galaxy

A massive and rare merging of two galaxies has been spotted in images taken by the Herschel space observatory, a European Space Agency mission with important NASA participation.

Emergency Exercise Tests SLAC Earthquake Readiness

Major earthquakes are among the greatest threats to our safety and infrastructure. That's why last week's emergency preparedness exercise was an important opportunity for SLAC staff to practice what to do in such an earthquake.

As anyone living in the Bay Area knows, major earthquakes are among the greatest threats to our safety and infrastructure.

Virtual Visit to the ATLAS Control Room by XIII Festival of Science in Cracow

"Aspects of Water" is the title of the 13-th Festival of Science in Cracow. The Festival is traditionally located on the Main Square, which is the biggest medieval market square in Europe. This annual event is visited by thousands of citizens and tourists each year. Institute of Nuclear Physics (IFJ) is one of almost 20 universities and institutes organising the Science Village during the Festival.

Research Opportunities Plentiful for Next Generation Batteries

Berkeley Lab spin-off company PolyPlus is making big strides in lithium-metal batteries, but there are research challenges and opportunities ahead.

Whirlpools on the Nanoscale Could Multiply Magnetic Memory

Research at the Advanced Light Source promises four-bit magnetic cells instead of the two-bit magnetic domains of standard magnetic memories. Magnetic vortices are whirlpools of magnetic field, in which electron spins point either clockwise or counterclockwise. In the crowded center of the whirlpool the spins point either down or up. These four orientations can represent separate bits of information in a new kind of memory, if they can be controlled independently and simultaneously.

CMS, Michel Della Negra and Jim Virdee among winners of 2013 EPS Prize

Event recorded with the CMS detector in 2012 at a proton-proton centre of mass energy of 8 TeV. The event shows characteristics expected from the decay of the SM Higgs boson to a pair of photons (dashed yellow lines and green towers). The event could also be due to known standard model background processes.

The EPS High Energy Physics Division announces the winners of its 2013 prizes, which will be awarded at the Europhysics Conference on High-Energy Physics (EPS-HEP 2013), Stockholm (Sweden) 18-24 July 2013 (http://eps-hep2013.eu/):

The 2013 High Energy and Particle Physics Prize, for an outstanding contribution to High Energy Physics, is awarded to the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, "for the discovery of a Higgs boson, as predicted by the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism", and to Michel Della Negra, Peter Jenni, and Tejinder Virdee, "for their pioneering and outstanding leadership roles in the making of the ATLAS and CMS experiments".
